How to Choose a TruRyde Drum Brake Kit: Electric vs Hydraulic, Capacity and Axle Count

Choosing a TruRyde drum brake kit starts with three questions: Does your trailer use electric or hydraulic brakes? What is the capacity and wheel-end configuration of each axle? How many axles need matching brake kits?

Start with the axle and existing braking system, not just the number of wheels. A kit can have the right capacity and still have the wrong bearings, bolt circle, studs or brake-flange fit. Single, tandem and triple describe axle count; they do not identify the parts that fit your spindles.

Key takeaway

  • Electric and hydraulic describe how the drum brakes are applied. Choose wheel-end parts that match the planned control or actuator system.
  • Match each axle, not the trailer's total weight. Capacity, spindle, bearings, brake dimensions and mounting flange all matter.
  • Count the parts in the kit. The TruRyde 3,500 lb., 5,200 lb. heavy-duty and 7,000 lb. electric examples below contain two hub-and-drum assemblies and one left-hand and one right-hand brake: one axle's wheel ends.
  • A wheel-end kit is not the whole braking system. Review controls, wiring or hydraulic plumbing, and breakaway equipment separately.

What is a TruRyde drum brake kit?

A drum brake uses shoes inside a brake drum. A hub-and-drum assembly provides the wheel hub and the drum's braking surface. The brake assembly mounts at the axle's brake flange.

For example, the 3,500 lb. BK545ELE-IPS electric kit contains two hub-and-drum assemblies, a left-hand brake, a right-hand brake, bearings, seals, caps, spindle hardware and lug nuts. The comparable BK545HYD-IPS hydraulic kit also supplies two wheel ends, but uses hydraulic brake assemblies. Check the exact listing's contents and mounting hardware rather than assuming every kit contains the same pieces.

Do not confuse these axle kits with a single backing plate, a pair of backing plates or a hub-and-drum sold separately. TruRyde's manufacturer catalog also lists packaged brake assembly kits containing one brake assembly. The word "kit" alone does not tell you how many wheels it equips or whether hubs are included.

Step 1: Choose electric or hydraulic drum brakes

Electric: match the brakes and electrical system

Electric drum brakes use an electromagnet to operate the brake mechanism. The tow vehicle's compatible brake controller and the trailer's wiring are part of that system. Replacing an existing electric setup starts with identifying the axle, drum size and brake assembly, then checking the electrical equipment that will operate the replacement brakes.

TruRyde offers standard and self-adjusting electric assemblies. For a 3,500 lb. #84 axle with a 5 on 4.50" bolt circle, compare BK545ELE-IPS with the self-adjusting BK545ELEAUTO-IPS. Both listings specify 10" x 2-1/4" brakes, L68149 inner bearings and L44649 outer bearings. Self-adjusting is a brake-assembly choice, not a different axle rating or permission to skip inspection and setup.

Browse Electric Trailer Brake Kits or Self-Adjusting Electric Brake Kits, then select the TruRyde listing that matches your axle.

Hydraulic: match the brakes and actuator system

Hydraulic drum brakes use fluid pressure at the wheel cylinders to apply the shoes. They need a compatible hydraulic actuator and lines, not direct magnet wiring at each brake. A hydraulic system may use a surge actuator or an electric-over-hydraulic actuator; either way, the actuator must be suitable for the selected drum brakes.

The 3,500 lb. BK545HYD-IPS uses 10" x 2-1/4" free-backing hydraulic brakes. Its wheel-end parts list is not an actuator-and-line package. Actuators and hose kits appear separately as related purchases. Check the selected kit's actual contents and plan the complete hydraulic system before ordering.

Free-backing and uni-servo are distinct hydraulic brake designs in TruRyde's catalog. Do not assume every hydraulic assembly has the same reverse-operation characteristics. Have your installer confirm the selected brakes, actuator and any reverse-lockout requirements together. Start with Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kits.

Changing electric to hydraulic is a system change. Matching the hub bolt circle does not address the controls, plumbing, actuator, wiring or emergency braking arrangement. Have the complete conversion reviewed rather than treating it as a backing-plate swap.

Step 2: Match capacity and the complete wheel end

Read the axle identification and compare the existing components with the proposed kit. An axle-capacity number is not a trailer gross-weight rating, and installing a different brake kit does not increase the axle or trailer rating. For the wider capacity discussion, see Choosing Trailer Axle Capacity: Hitch Weight, GAWR, Wheels and Tires.

Listed axle application TruRyde kit examples Selection point
2,000 lb. BK2KELE electric 7" x 1-1/4" brakes; 5 on 4.50" bolt circle; L44649 bearings on both ends. Not the same wheel end as a 3,500 lb. kit.
3,500 lb. #84 BK545ELE-IPS, BK545ELEAUTO-IPS and BK545HYD-IPS Electric, self-adjusting electric and hydraulic choices; these examples use a 5 on 4.50" bolt circle and 10" x 2-1/4" brakes.
4,400 lb. Lippert BK655ELE-44K electric The listing limits this kit to Lippert 4,400 lb. axles and excludes Dexter and 3,500 lb. applications.
5,200 lb. heavy-duty BK13ELE-IPS, BK13ELEAUTO-IPS and BK13HYD-IPS A separate heavy-duty application with 6 on 5.50" kit choices. Verify the spindle and bearings, not just the six-lug wheel.
7,000 lb. BK42865ELE-IPS and BK42865HYD-IPS These examples have an 8 on 6.50" bolt circle and 1/2" studs. Separate 9/16" stud variants are listed.
8,000 lb. BK8K580 and BK8K916 electric kits Separate 5/8" and 9/16" stud listings. Confirm the exact axle application and wheel-end configuration.
10,000 lb. and 12,000 lb. BK10KL and BK12KELE electric kits BK10KL is specifically a Lippert 10,000 lb. short-spindle application. Do not treat it as a universal 10,000 lb. kit.

These are application examples, not an interchange chart. TruRyde's range of individual brake assemblies is broader than the complete kits shown here; a manufacturer assembly listing does not prove that a complete hub-and-drum kit exists for every capacity and brake type.

Bearings can separate two kits that look similar. BK13ELE-IPS and BK42865ELE-IPS both list 12" x 2" electric brakes and a 25580 inner bearing. The 5,200 lb. heavy-duty kit lists a 15123 outer bearing; the 7,000 lb. kit lists a 14125A outer bearing. Their wheel patterns also differ. Neither brake diameter nor the inner bearing alone establishes fit.

Record the inner and outer bearing numbers, seal dimensions, spindle configuration, wheel bolt circle, stud diameter, brake dimensions and flange pattern. If a term is unfamiliar, use Trailer Axle Terms: A Plain-English Glossary before making the comparison.

Step 3: Count single, tandem or triple axles

For the confirmed two-wheel axle kits above, axle count changes the quantity ordered, not the spindle fit. A tandem trailer does not make one axle kit cover four wheels, and a triple trailer does not make it cover six.

Trailer arrangement If every axle is equipped Quantity of a confirmed two-wheel axle kit
Single axle Two braked wheel ends One kit
Tandem axle Four braked wheel ends Two matching kits
Triple axle Six braked wheel ends Three matching kits

This quantity example assumes each axle matches the selected kit and the braking plan equips every axle. Verify the required braking arrangement with a qualified installer and applicable requirements; do not use the table to justify leaving an axle without brakes.

For the documented two-wheel TruRyde kits, plan the order by matching axle application and kit quantity rather than assuming a dedicated tandem or triple package. Do not assume a tandem or triple TruRyde order includes an actuator, controller, line kit or breakaway equipment. Check package quantity for the exact listing, especially when moving to a different capacity family.

More wheel-end kits do not automatically complete the controls. For electric brakes, confirm controller capacity and trailer wiring for the total brake count. For hydraulic brakes, confirm actuator suitability and the line layout for all braked axles. Do not multiply actuators by the number of wheel-end kits or assume a single-axle hose kit reaches a tandem or triple trailer.

Final checks before ordering

  • Electric or hydraulic operation, including standard or self-adjusting electric and the selected hydraulic brake design.
  • Each axle's identified application, spindle, inner and outer bearings, and seal fit.
  • Brake diameter and width, mounting-flange pattern and required mounting hardware.
  • Wheel bolt circle, stud size and compatible wheel hardware.
  • Two-wheel kit quantity versus individual assemblies, plus the number of axles being equipped.
  • Required controller or actuator, wiring or lines, and the correct emergency breakaway arrangement.

Pre-greased and Timken-bearing variants are secondary choices after fitment. A pre-greased listing describes preparation of the supplied parts; it does not remove the need to follow the component instructions. Have a qualified installer handle installation, adjustment, hydraulic bleeding where applicable, and testing. Follow TruRyde's instructions for the exact brake components and the respective manufacturers' instructions for the controller or actuator. Southwest Wheel sells new product; it does not provide installation or brake-bleeding service.

If the whole axle needs replacement, use Build a Complete Dexter Trailer Axle for the broader planning discussion. If you are considering disc brakes instead, see How to Choose a DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit: Slip-Over vs Integral, Capacity and Axle Count. Disc-brake kit contents and actuator selection should not be assumed to apply to TruRyde drum kits.

FAQ

Does one TruRyde kit equip a tandem trailer?

Not when the listing supplies two hub-and-drum assemblies and a left/right brake pair. That equips one axle's wheel ends. Equipping two matching axles takes two such kits; equipping three takes three.

Can I choose by wheel bolt pattern alone?

No. A matching wheel pattern does not confirm spindle, bearings, seals, brake dimensions or flange fit. Stud diameter also needs its own check.

Does a hydraulic drum brake kit include the actuator?

The BK545HYD-IPS contents described here are wheel-end components; actuators and hoses are separate related purchases. Review the exact listing and the complete system instead of assuming an actuator is included.

Ready to match your TruRyde drum brake kit?

Start with electric or hydraulic operation, identify each axle, then count the matching wheel-end kits. Have your axle label, bearing numbers and wheel details ready for fitment assistance.
